‘V-mart’ Victor Martinez, who played 16 years in the major leagues, joins the front of the Toronto Blue Jays.

A native of Venezuela, Martinez signed with the Cleveland Guardians in 1996 on an international amateur contract. After that, he went through the Boston Red Sox, and retired after the Detroit Tigers we know well.
Initially, he joined as a catcher, but after his joining Detroit, he mainly appeared as a designated hitter and became known as a switch hitter. During his time with Detroit, he led the hitting line with Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and JD Martinez.
He had a career batting average of 0.295 with 246 home runs, 2,153 hits, and 1,178 RBIs for an OPS of 0.815. He was a five-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger, and announced his retirement at the end of the 2018 season.
He hasn’t moved much since his retirement, but on this day he turned a new page when he joined the Toronto front.
During his Cleveland days, the beginning of his debut, he has a close relationship with Toronto’s current president Mark Shapiro and general manager Ross Atkins. Shapiro was Cleveland’s general manager at the time. The relationship has continued to this day, and Martinez is expected to bring a wealth of experience to the Toronto club.
