Monty Williams has rejected Detroit’s offer of a head coaching position.
Local media outlet “RealGM” reported on Detroit’s search for a new head coach on Aug. 25 (KST).
The NBA is in the midst of a shocking string of coaching firings. Nick Nurse, Mike Budenholzer, Monty Williams, and other NBA greats are all on the market.
Their focus is on Milwaukee, Phoenix, Toronto메이저놀이터, and Philadelphia. These are teams that have just fired their head coaches, are already at a high level of talent, and are perceived to be in contention for a championship with the right coach next season.
On the other hand, there are teams in the exact same situation that aren’t getting any attention. The Detroit Pistons are another team that got rid of their head coach as soon as the season ended, and there aren’t even any links to them. Unlike the aforementioned powerhouses, they were a last-place team with a 17-65 record and a 20.7% winning percentage last season.
Detroit has a number of top prospects, including No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham, as well as Jayden Ivey, Jaylen Durren, and James Wiseman. It seems like they have the resources to build for the future. But coaches don’t want to go to Detroit. With head coaching vacancies in Milwaukee, Phoenix, Toronto, and Philadelphia, there’s no reason to go to a last-place team.
According to RealGM, Williams, who was recently fired by Phoenix, was immediately offered the Detroit head coaching job. Detroit reportedly planned to select Victor Wembanyama with the 2023 first-round pick and then hand him over to Williams to develop. In reality, the Wolves ended up with the fifth overall pick, but still extended an offer to Williams.
However, Williams quickly turned him down. It’s a testament to their current status.
Unlike other teams that have been linked to high-level names, Detroit has narrowed down their head coaching candidates to Kevin Ollie, Jaren Collins, and Charles Lee. All of them have no NBA head coaching experience.
